book club

I joined a book club last fall! I can't remember if I've blogged about it, but I think it's about time!
When Charlotte was a newborn, I was desperate to get out and meet other people, and also wanted to get involved in something just for me. So I called the public library and asked about book clubs and whether I'd be able to bring a newborn (as she mainly slept and ate at that point!). They said sure, but I had to go on a waiting list. Well, about a year later, they called and there was a spot! So I joined but manage to line up sitters for Charlotte as she is much too rambunctious to take to a book club now.

So everyone is older than me, but it is great to meet new people, outside of the mommy and baby world. The women (and one man) have great input and perspectives and we often have lively debates! We meet once a month and read a new book every month. Some of my favorites so far have been:

"Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
and the first one we read:

"The Nine Lives of Charlotte Taylor: The First Woman Settler of the Miramichi" by Sally Armstrong

I used to love to read, until I studied English in my first undergrad degree. Then it became a chore as I had to read A LOT of books for that degree. Since then, I haven't read a lot of fiction just the odd book here and there. I read a lot of non-fiction now (parenting, baby books etc). Joining this book club in one way has forced me to get back into reading again and it turns out, I really enjoy it! I love being able to do something just for me and to have my own reading goals. Let me know... what do you like to read?? What is on your bookshelf these days?

  1. Thanks for the book recommendations! I am currently working my way through the Sookie Stackhouse vampire series. It's a little raunchy and violent but it's about at the level my brain can handle right now :) Do you use Goodreads.com to keep track of your "read" and "to read" lists? I enjoy it. - Angela at Breastfeeding 1-2-3
